Volkswagen and Chrysler: A Surprising Partnership and its Impact on the US Auto Market

Volkswagen and DaimlerChrysler (DCX) are embarking on a collaborative venture, exploring opportunities to build vehicles for each other, rather than a full-blown merger. This strategic alliance aims to address gaps in their respective product lines and leverage each other’s strengths.

Volkswagen has decided against importing its microbus to the American market due to conversion costs and exchange rate challenges. Instead, VW will introduce a rebadged version of Chrysler’s popular Voyager minivan in the US. This new VW minivan, yet to be named, will essentially be a rebranded Voyager, filling a crucial void in VW’s lineup and retaining customers seeking larger vehicles.

DaimlerChrysler (DCX) stands to gain by maximizing its minivan production capacity. Furthermore, DCX is considering importing rebadged versions of VW’s compact Polo to bolster its own product range. The Polo is expected to be sold as a Dodge, positioned as an entry-level vehicle below the upcoming Caliber. The rebranded Polo could potentially arrive as a 2007 model.

This collaboration allows VW and DCX to mutually benefit by leveraging each other’s expertise and resources. The success of this partnership hinges on consumer acceptance of the rebadged vehicles and their ability to meet market demands.
