Broadway shows represent the pinnacle of theatrical performance in New York City’s vibrant theater district, primarily concentrated in Midtown Manhattan around Times Square. These productions, encompassing both musicals and plays, are distinguished by the Actors’ Equity Association’s criteria, with only the 39 largest theaters, each seating 500 or more, officially designated as Broadway venues.
These shows, often backed by major production houses such as Fox, Disney, and the Shubert Organization, or esteemed theater groups like the Manhattan Theatre Club, are renowned for their lavish sets, elaborate costumes, and world-class talent. While stage artists form the backbone of these performances, the allure of Broadway frequently attracts celebrated film actors, further elevating the shows’ appeal.
Broadway’s influence extends far beyond New York, considered the birthplace of American musical theater. Its global popularity draws performers and audiences alike from around the world, making it a premier tourist destination. Touring Broadway productions bring the magic to cities across the United States.
