For car enthusiasts, certain songs evoke powerful memories and emotions. While I have many favorites, Commander Cody’s “Hot Rod Lincoln” tops my list. Living in a region with harsh winters necessitates a reliable winter vehicle. One September, we found a dark green 1976 Lincoln Town Car, a true beauty weighing over 5000 lbs with a robust 460 V-8 engine. The ride was incredibly smooth, and it possessed surprising power. I vividly recall the night we acquired it. Accustomed to driving a Corvette, my partner Chuck initially took the wheel. Having been out of practice, I cautioned him to drive cautiously in the dark. However, anyone familiar with this car knows that its immense power makes 30 mph feel like a crawl, quickly escalating to 50 or 60. Before we knew it, we were on the back roads, and Chuck was pushing the Corvette to keep up! Immersed in the car’s performance, I felt a sense of joy I hadn’t experienced since my first car, a 1962 Chevy Belair. This Lincoln was even bigger and faster. Upon arriving home, Chuck expressed his concerns, but ultimately, everything was fine. The Lincoln proved to be an exceptional winter car, never faltering even in Rochester’s heavy snow. I witnessed numerous cars struggling, while the Lincoln effortlessly plowed through, ensuring I never missed a day of work. Even in temperatures of minus 40 with wind chill, it started reliably, providing wonderfully warm air. It served us admirably for three winters before we relocated west. We eventually sold it to a college student in New Jersey. It remained in excellent condition, with only minor rust typical of the East Coast’s cold, snowy, and salty environment. I would eagerly acquire another one if the opportunity arose. While not a “hot rod Lincoln,” it evokes very fond memories. Other favorites include Little GTO, 409, and Deadman’s Curve, the ultimate song for those who live recklessly. What are your favorite car songs and the stories behind them? Share your favorites, and perhaps we’ll create a dedicated section on the website.
