Superman stands as an unparalleled icon in the comic book realm. DC Comics has explored countless iterations of the character, most embodying the archetype of a lawful and benevolent hero. Yet, shadows exist within the Superman legacy, and from those shadows emerged Superboy-Prime, arguably the most dangerous of them all.
Superboy-Prime’s descent from hero to cosmic threat necessitates understanding his origins. He hailed from Earth-Prime, a parallel Earth devoid of superheroes except for him. A cataclysmic event forced the destruction of alternate Earths to preserve one. Superboy-Prime, alongside Earth-Prime’s Lex Luthor and another Superman variant, Kal-El, willingly entered a pocket dimension to safeguard the universe. However, isolation and the loss of his world warped his mind. Fueled by Lex Luthor’s manipulations, Superboy-Prime shattered his confinement, driven to restore Earth-Prime by annihilating the existing Earth.
He saw the current Earth as irredeemably flawed, blurring the lines between heroes and villains, treating both as enemies. In his warped perception, he considered himself the sole true hero. The title “Superboy,” however, fueled a deep-seated status anxiety, a yearning to be recognized as Superman. His quest to resurrect Earth-Prime became intertwined with this desire, as it would erase all other Superman variations, leaving him as the ultimate, singular Superman. He subconsciously sought to eliminate any version of himself he perceived as superior, hoping to quell his insecurities.
Superboy-Prime also battled performance anxiety. Despite his immense power, he seemingly couldn’t replicate Superman’s heroic feats. He doubted his ability to measure up to existing Supermen and even the current Superboy. This self-doubt manifested as rage and contempt towards alternate versions of himself.
His godlike power amplified his status anxiety, making him believe he deserved the title of “Superman” solely based on his abilities. He brutally defeated the current universe’s Superboy, ultimately killing him. He overpowered Powergirl and even Supergirl, who is typically stronger than Superman. Only the combined might of two Supermen, the current one and Kal-El, could subdue him, a victory made possible by Kal-El’s sacrifice and red sun radiation, which weakened Prime. He effortlessly defeated multiple Green Lanterns simultaneously, a feat beyond Superman’s capabilities. Kryptonite and magic proved ineffective against him, and while vulnerable to telepathy, he resisted control, further distinguishing him from his Kryptonian counterparts. These instances reinforced his belief that his power should automatically grant him the title of Superman.
Superboy-Prime represents a complex situation viewed through an overly simplistic lens. His isolated upbringing denied him the maturity and guidance needed to navigate intricate moral frameworks. Like some versions of Supergirl, he lacks psychological restraints on his power, leading to unchecked destruction. The loss of his home triggered separation anxiety, evolving into a consuming obsession. Some heroes observed that he has grown callous, indifferent to innocent lives.
However, his transformation isn’t solely his fault. Lex Luthor instigated his escape and convinced him of the current universe’s inferiority. The people of Earth-Prime hailed him as their savior, burdening him with a destiny to become the greatest hero. Superboy-Prime’s mindset is best summarized in his own words: “Cold? Cold is being the lone survivor of a dead universe! Cold is being imprisoned when you tried to make things better! Cold is what this universe has made me!”
