As an elementary school teacher, I cherish the conversations I have with my students about their future aspirations. Children possess such innocent and endearing dreams. Each fall, I dedicate time to discussing various professions and inviting professionals from different fields to inspire them. This past year, one of my students, Annie, expressed a unique ambition: she wanted to be an acrobat.

An acrobat was a profession I hadn’t heard from a student before. I was fascinated to learn about Annie’s motivations. Her ambition, like many children’s, stemmed from a few key influences.

Firstly, Annie’s mother is an accomplished gymnast who teaches local classes and is respected for her contributions to training young gymnasts. Annie, like many children, aspires to emulate someone she admires. It’s common for children to want to follow in the footsteps of the people they love and respect.

Secondly, Annie had seen a TV show or movie featuring acrobats. The media significantly impacts children, both positively and negatively, depending on the content. Parents and teachers must be mindful of this influence.

Thirdly, Annie is currently enrolled in gymnastics classes and genuinely enjoys them. Children often gravitate towards activities they excel in and find fulfilling, which then shapes their future ambitions.

Whether your child dreams of becoming an acrobat or something else entirely, it’s important to recognize the profound influence of your own life, their activities, and the media they consume. Nurturing their passions and guiding them towards positive influences can help them achieve their full potential.
