Ballerina music boxes, inlaid music boxes, musical jewelry boxes, cylinder music boxes, and antique music boxes possess a delicate beauty. Collectors understand the importance of preserving these treasures, often requiring expert repair and restoration. Locating reputable specialists is crucial, and one such expert is Jim Weir, based in Scotland.

Jim Weir specializes in antique musical box repairs and restoration, encompassing comb repairs, releading and tuning, dampening, cylinder repairs, and organ bridge work. He handles both disc and cylinder music boxes.

In a recent interview, Jim shared insights into his business, offering a glimpse into the world of music box restoration. He recounted his journey, stating, “I’m 56 and have been working on musical boxes for the best part of 30 years…depending on workload my wife and both daughters help with pinning cylinders; I guess it’s a family business really?”

Regarding his business operations, Jim explained that he primarily operates offline, relying on word-of-mouth and contacts. While he utilizes the internet for sourcing workshop supplies, he focuses on repair work, from full restorations to component repairs. He collaborates with a team of skilled pinners and has recently expanded his reach to the USA through advertising in the MBSI Journal.

When asked about his motivation, Jim shared, “I trained as a clock repairer. One day a customer brought in a 15.1/2″ Polyphon and asked me to `fix it’. That’s where it started.”

Addressing the challenges he’s faced, Jim admitted, “My worst problem…has been myself. Some of the work I’ve done has been fairly intense; taking it on as if it were some kind of personal challenge has not perhaps been the wisest thing to do. I’m largely self-taught, and I’m not a good teacher, or a particularly good pupil come to that.”

In terms of marketing, Jim relies on advertising in the MBSI Journal, finding it effective in attracting new clients. He doesn’t currently utilize online marketing tools.

Reflecting on his career path, Jim revealed, “When I was at school, I wanted to be a train driver. Musical box work has become a passion though; trying to get the best possible sound out of a musical box is part of what drives me.”
