The relentless demands of family, work, and household responsibilities often lead mothers to neglect their own beauty and self-care routines. A recent survey highlights the extent of this selflessness, revealing that a staggering 75% of moms have skipped showers to attend to their children, with 25% admitting to going three days or more without showering.
Further underscoring this trend, nearly half of mothers report going seven months or longer without a haircut, and 61% confess to favoring sweatpants and ponytails since becoming mothers. The Suave® Beauty Monitor Survey, which polled mothers nationwide, sheds light on the challenges of balancing motherhood and personal well-being.
The survey indicates that beauty often takes a backseat to family needs. Only 13% of moms believe that their appearance hasn’t been compromised by motherhood. When prioritizing activities, self-care consistently ranks low, often falling behind laundry, leisure time, and personal shopping. This neglect can have a significant impact, with 50% of mothers acknowledging that their appearance has declined or become more difficult to maintain since having children.
According to Stacy London, host of TLC’s “What Not to Wear,” mothers frequently sacrifice their beauty and personal needs. London emphasizes that beauty should be a priority within motherhood, enabling mothers to feel and look their best.
While many mothers desire to feel beautiful, over half (55%) perceive self-care as a luxury. The Beauty Monitor Survey reveals that time isn’t the only constraint. When allocated an extra $50 in their monthly budget, 59% of moms would prioritize family needs such as clothing, groceries, or school supplies for their children. Only 14% would spend it on themselves, with a mere 2% allocating it to beauty products.
London advises that investing some time and money in self-care is crucial, but it doesn’t require exorbitant spending. Simple steps and affordable products can effectively restore beauty to a mother’s routine. She recommends using accessible brands like Suave, encouraging mothers to prioritize self-care while embracing both motherhood and beauty.
