Transitioning from web design to print design can be tricky, especially for designers accustomed to the digital realm. Here are five common graphic design errors and how to steer clear of them:

1. Web Graphics in Print: Using low-resolution web graphics (like 72dpi images) in print projects is a recipe for disaster. What looks acceptable as a small thumbnail online will appear pixelated and blurry when enlarged for print. While royalty-free stock photo sites offer high-resolution alternatives, always verify the resolution of any image before using it in a print project.

2. Bleed Issues: Forgetting or neglecting to include bleed is a frequent mistake. Bleed refers to the area that extends beyond the trim edge of a printed piece. At least 3mm of bleed on all edges is generally recommended. Without it, printers have no margin for error and may end up cropping the design or leaving unsightly white borders.

3. Font Faux Pas: Using obscure fonts without embedding or outlining them can create headaches. While it’s fine if you are the sole user of the files, sharing them becomes problematic. If the recipient doesn’t have the fonts installed, the software will substitute them, altering the design. Converting fonts to outlines ensures that they appear correctly regardless of whether the font is installed on the viewing computer.

4. Color Mode Catastrophe: Supplying print-ready artwork in spot colors or RGB instead of CMYK is a common blunder. While spot colors have their place (e.g., matching specific Pantone colors), most print jobs use the CMYK color model. RGB images can appear vibrant on screen, but their printed counterparts may look dull or washed out. Always convert RGB images to CMYK before sending them to print.

5. Client Control Chaos: While the customer is important, blindly following a design-illiterate client’s direction can lead to disastrous results. Presenting a range of options, including a deliberately flawed design, can help clients appreciate the value of your expertise. It’s a delicate balance between satisfying the client and creating effective design.
