Blackwater International, formerly Blackwater USA and now known as Academi, is expanding its operational footprint with a new training facility in Otay Mesa, San Diego. This state-of-the-art complex, situated on Siempre Viva Road, will provide comprehensive training for law enforcement personnel, military personnel, and Academi’s own security recruits. The 61,600-square-foot building is designed to accommodate a wide range of training activities.

Founded in 1997 by former Navy SEALs Erik Prince and Al Clark, Blackwater has evolved into a leading provider of security, protection, and training services. While serving private companies and individuals, the company gained international recognition through its involvement in U.S. government contracts and missions.

Blackwater has played a significant role in various overseas military operations, acting as a key contractor for the U.S. government. Alongside its extensive facilities and workforce, Blackwater maintains a substantial network of U.S. and foreign contractors. Recent government contracts have included support for operations in Afghanistan, the Iraq War, and disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina. The company also provides services to the petrochemical, insurance, and communications sectors.

Initially, Blackwater primarily provided security details for diplomats and other high-profile visitors in conflict zones like Afghanistan and Iraq. They protected American and Iraqi officials from insurgent attacks and contributed to the training of the newly formed Iraqi army following the U.S. military intervention.

In a tragic event in March 2004, Iraqi insurgents ambushed four Blackwater employees transporting food, resulting in their deaths and the display of their bodies on a bridge over the Euphrates River. This incident was a catalyst for the subsequent attack on Fallujah.

Originally based in Moyock, North Carolina, the company’s name was inspired by the dark water of a nearby swamp. The headquarters was established to facilitate comprehensive training for recruits and to conduct research and development for specialized equipment. The facility includes tactical training courses, high-caliber shooting ranges, and a hostage situation simulation building. Its advanced capabilities have made it a valuable resource for law enforcement agencies, Navy SEALs, and other military units seeking specialized training.
