Academi, formerly known as Blackwater Worldwide, is establishing a new training facility in Otay Mesa, San Diego. This expansion involves relocating their training operations to a 61,600-square-foot building on Siempre Viva Road. The facility will serve as a training hub for law enforcement, military personnel, and Academi’s own security recruits.
Founded in 1997 by former Navy SEALs Erik Prince and Al Clark, Academi provides a range of security services, primarily focused on defense, protection, and training. While they cater to private companies and individuals, Academi gained international prominence through its work with the U.S. government.
Academi has been involved in numerous overseas missions as a key contractor for the U.S. government, alongside two other major firms. With a large infrastructure and workforce, Academi employs both U.S. and foreign contractors. Notable past contracts include support operations in Afghanistan, the Iraq War, and disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina. The company also provides services to the petrochemical, insurance, and communications sectors.
Initially, Academi’s primary role was providing security for diplomats and high-profile visitors in Afghanistan and Iraq during periods of conflict. The company protected American and Iraqi officials from insurgent attacks and participated in the training of the rebuilt Iraqi army after the U.S. military’s intervention.
In a tragic incident in March 2004, four Blackwater employees were ambushed by Iraqi insurgents while delivering supplies. The contractors were killed in the attack, and their bodies were displayed on a bridge over the Euphrates River. This event contributed to the subsequent military action in Fallujah.
Originally based in Moyock, North Carolina, the company’s name was inspired by the dark water of a swamp near its 6,000-acre facility. The headquarters was designed to facilitate comprehensive training, research, and development of specialized equipment. The facility includes tactical training courses, high-caliber shooting ranges, and a simulated hostage rescue building. Its advanced capabilities make it a popular training site for law enforcement agencies, Navy SEALs, and other military units.
