A career in the automotive service industry offers both fulfillment and financial rewards. Automotive technicians, equipped with expertise in modern vehicle technology and computer systems, can earn salaries ranging from $58,000 to $108,000 annually.
The growing demand for skilled service technicians stems from the increasing number of vehicles on the road and the integration of advanced electronics and computers in today’s cars and trucks. This creates numerous job opportunities for qualified individuals.
The U.S. Department of Labor has invested $2.2 million in the Automotive Youth Education System (AYES), a collaborative effort between automotive manufacturers, dealerships, and schools. AYES aims to attract young people to careers in automotive service and repair by providing comprehensive training that prepares students for entry-level positions or further studies in automotive technology.
Larry Cummings, president and CEO of AYES, emphasizes the rewarding nature of automotive service technology careers: “Today’s vehicles contain more technology than the Apollo spacecraft. Success in this field requires intensive and extensive training.”
The AYES program introduces students to the automotive field during their junior year of high school. Participating students enroll in challenging courses in basic automotive technology or collision repair, alongside their regular academic coursework.
Qualified students participate in full-time internships at dealerships, honing their skills under the mentorship of experienced technicians. Upon graduating high school and achieving AYES certification, they are prepared to enter full-time employment or pursue advanced technical education.
