The evolution of motor oil technology has dramatically altered recommended oil change intervals since the early days of automobiles. Initially, oil changes were necessary every 500 to 1,000 miles, with seasonal viscosity adjustments. The introduction of oil filtration and improved additive technology in the 1930s extended intervals to 2,000 and then 3,000 miles. Later, viscosity modifiers in the 1940s enabled the creation of multi-grade oils suitable for both hot and cold conditions.

While extended oil drain technology exists, some oil companies have historically prioritized other objectives. A 2001 interview quoted Marc Graham, president of Jiffy Lube International (owned by Pennzoil-Quaker State), stating that reducing drain intervals by just 100 miles per car could generate an additional $20 million in revenue for the company. He also noted that gaining just one extra oil change per year from each customer could boost revenue by nearly $300 million from oil changes alone, and over $440 million when including related products and services.

European vehicle manufacturers have long advocated for extended oil drain intervals, with an average interval of 10,000 miles. U.S. manufacturers are also increasingly adopting this approach. Current owner’s manuals for recent models often recommend oil change intervals of 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Furthermore, oil life monitoring systems are now common, allowing drivers to extend intervals up to 12,000 miles, even with conventional oil. These systems analyze engine data, such as temperature, speed, and revolutions, to determine oil condition, rather than relying solely on mileage.

As the industry progresses, more and more operations managers are exploring the benefits of extended oil drain intervals. Despite the potential cautions, the savings in maintenance costs and improved uptime can be substantial. In the near future, it’s anticipated that extended intervals will become standard practice, with several engine manufacturers already considering revised recommendations for oil and filter change schedules.
