For years, many car rental companies have restricted rentals to those 25 and older, based on the perception that younger drivers (early 20s) are statistically more likely to engage in risky driving behaviors. However, increased competition within the car rental market is causing some companies to reassess these policies, opening up new options for younger renters.
While this is good news, it often comes with added costs. Eugene Minkin, 23, encountered this firsthand during a trip to Miami. Renting from Alamo, he faced a significant daily surcharge because he and his passengers were under 25, in addition to mandatory insurance and the standard rental fee. The total exceeded $650. Despite the expense, Minkin acknowledged that renting a car as a young driver was a privilege that wouldn’t have been possible a few years prior.
Rent-A-Wreck has long been an exception to this rule, welcoming drivers under 25 for years. “By the early ’90s, most of our locations were renting to drivers under 25,” explains Jason Manelli, director of public relations for Rent-A-Wreck. “We consider ourselves experts in rentals to younger drivers, with many locations even renting to those aged 18 to 21.”
Rent-A-Wreck typically requires drivers under 25 to have their own auto insurance coverage and a credit card in their name. They also require advance booking to verify insurance and references. Select locations may also run credit reports and review driving records. These measures help ensure responsible young drivers can access rental cars.
