The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, specifically UVA and UVB, are primary culprits in photoaging. These rays damage collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for skin’s elasticity and firmness, leading to premature wrinkles. The extent of sun damage varies depending on skin color and cumulative sun exposure. Individuals with darker skin tones exhibit greater resilience compared to fair-skinned individuals.

Beyond sun exposure, gravity contributes to skin aging. As we age, the effects of gravity become more apparent, causing jowls to form, ears and the tip of the nose to elongate, due to the loss of elastin. Smoking is another major contributor, leading to premature wrinkles and a characteristic yellow hue. Quitting smoking can mitigate these effects.

Facial expressions also play a role. Repetitive muscle movements create lines that, over time, become permanent wrinkles. While completely avoiding facial expressions is unrealistic, mindful awareness can help. Even sleeping positions contribute; sleeping face down can cause forehead wrinkles, while sleeping on your side can lead to cheek wrinkles. Sleeping on your back can help minimize these sleep lines.
