A manicure is a cosmetic beauty treatment focused on the fingernails and hands, addressing either or both. A standard manicure includes nail filing, shaping, and polish application. Hand treatments often involve soaking in a softening solution and applying hand lotion. The term “manicure” originates from the Latin words “manus” (hand) and “cura” (care). The manicuring process begins with sanitizing the workspace and tools, including the surface, metal implements, and towels.

The process starts with sanitizing the client’s hands and removing old polish or artificial nails. The hands are then cleaned with soap and warm water.

Next, the fingernails are trimmed and shaped using a file. While metal files offer rapid material removal, fine glass files are preferred. Disposable emery boards are also suitable. The correct filing technique involves moving the file from the outer edge towards the center, avoiding a sawing motion.

Cuticles are gently pushed back using a wooden or orangewood stick with a flat end. Metal cuticle pushers require careful handling to prevent damage to the nail matrix.

Fingernails may then be polished using a polishing board made of foam, paper, or plastic with a soft foam layer and fine polishing surfaces.

Finally, the manicurist applies at least one coat of clear polish to strengthen weak nails or multiple coats of colored polish and a top coat. A hand massage with lotion or oils completes the manicure.
