The label industry encompasses a vast array of products, leading to diverse label creation methods based on the printing techniques employed. Generally, labels fall into two primary categories: self-adhesive and non-self-adhesive.
Self-adhesive labels are typically produced using flexographic printing. This process involves printing on a roll, ideal for high-speed packaging lines. Starting a flexographic label printing operation requires a technological line for flexographic plate fabrication. A computer-to-plate (CTP) system is highly recommended, as it directly transfers pre-press files onto the photopolymer plate, streamlining the process and improving accuracy.
A flexographic printing machine is crucial. Opt for a machine with at least six color groups to achieve vibrant and detailed prints. Select a maximum printing format that aligns with your initial market estimations to ensure optimal productivity. The flexographic printing machine should also include components for essential finishing processes such as UV varnishing, die-cutting, and metallic foil stamping.
For non-self-adhesive labels, sheetfed offset printing is the standard. The investment plan should include a sheetfed printing press with a minimum of six color groups. The maximum print format should be carefully chosen based on market research conducted before launching the business.
In addition to the printing press, a guillotine is necessary for cutting the printed sheets into individual labels. The guillotine’s maximum opening should correspond to the printing machine’s format, while the range of cuttable formats should be as broad as possible. A programmable guillotine is highly advantageous, as it allows for precise and efficient cutting of various label sizes, boosting overall productivity.
If the sheetfed printing press lacks UV varnishing capabilities, a separate UV varnishing unit is essential. This can be either a dedicated UV varnishing machine or a modified classic sheetfed printing press with the humidification system removed and a UV drying unit installed at the delivery end.
Finally, consider a metallic foil stamping machine for adding decorative elements to sheetfed labels. These machines are available in automatic, semi-automatic, and manual configurations, depending on the scale of your business. For labels with non-rectangular shapes, a tunnel puncher is necessary. Select a tunnel puncher with a maximum processing dimension that aligns with your target market’s needs.
