OfficeMax, a familiar name for office supplies, computers, furniture, hardware, software, and copy and print services, began its journey in 1988. From a single store, it rapidly expanded into one of the largest office products superstore chains in the United States.
By January 1997, OfficeMax achieved a remarkable milestone, exceeding $3 billion in sales. This accomplishment placed them among the fastest-growing companies in U.S. history to reach that revenue mark in under nine years.
The story began on April 1, 1988, in Cleveland, Ohio. Michael Feuer, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, along with seven associates, founded OfficeMax. The first store opened on July 5th of the same year in Cleveland. By year’s end, three stores were serving the suburban Cleveland market.
The year 2000 marked a significant technological upgrade. OfficeMax implemented Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, a large-scale program designed for American retailing. This system provided real-time, integrated information across the organization. Additionally, OfficeMax consolidated its eCommerce business, catalog operations, and commercial sales groups into a unified OfficeMax.com/Direct Business Unit.
OfficeMax has also demonstrated a commitment to community support. In 2000, The OfficeMax Charitable Foundation was established, donating over $300,000 to various worthwhile causes. One notable sponsorship was the National Kids N Need Resource Center in Cleveland, Ohio, the first of its kind.
Through strategic partnerships with companies like Hewlett Packard and the introduction of ventures like FurnitureMax, CopyMax, and TechMax, OfficeMax offers a comprehensive suite of services. With a robust supply chain network and advanced computer systems, OfficeMax maintains a strong presence. Today, with over 900 locations across the United States, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, you can find an OfficeMax store readily available. In 1996, OfficeMax expanded internationally, opening its first store in Mexico. By 2000, 27 OfficeMax de Mexico stores were operating.
