Giving your newborn their first bath can feel daunting, especially for new parents. Rest assured, you’re embarking on a tradition practiced for generations. Modern baby tubs enhance safety, and many infants genuinely enjoy bath time! For the first couple of weeks, or until the umbilical cord heals, sponge baths are recommended. Since daily baths aren’t necessary, two sponge baths a week, or as needed, are sufficient. Before you begin, gather the following essentials:

* Thick towels or a sponge bath cushion
* Soft washcloths
* A bath seat for the basin or sink
* Cotton balls
* Non-irritating baby shampoo and soap
* A hooded baby towel
* A clean diaper and clothing

Ensure the room is warm (around 75 degrees Fahrenheit). Place a non-skid cushion or towel in the bath seat or tub to prevent slipping. Run warm water (90-100 degrees Fahrenheit, or comfortably warm to your wrist) into the sink or tub. Gently undress your baby, speaking in a soothing voice to explain each step. Slowly lower your baby into the water.

Begin with the face, using a small amount of baby soap. Next, wash the head and move downwards. Pay close attention to cleaning these areas: the neck, ears, buttocks, and groin, ensuring all creases are thoroughly cleaned. Avoid getting the umbilical cord area wet; instead, gently clean it with a cotton ball dipped in alcohol. If your son is circumcised, avoid retracting the foreskin when cleaning the groin area. Once the front is clean, wash the back.

Thoroughly dry your baby and dress them, ensuring the head is completely dry. The first bath may take time as your baby squirms and is slippery. Never remove your hands from your baby. With practice, this routine will become easy and enjoyable. Have fun creating these precious memories!
