A recent survey of ASE-certified Master Automobile Technicians reveals strong opposition to extended oil change intervals, a practice some in the automotive field have suggested. These top mechanics argue that adhering to traditional oil change schedules is crucial for engine health and preventing costly repairs.

The survey, commissioned by Valvoline, highlights the concerns of experienced technicians regarding the trend of recommending oil changes every 5,000 miles or more. Ron Weiner, President of ASE, emphasized the expertise of these technicians, stating, “Certified Master Automobile Technicians are the best of the best…they have definite thoughts on how motorists can participate in making their cars and trucks run better and last longer.”

Oil changes are considered vital for engine longevity. An overwhelming 84% of mechanics believe that neglecting regular oil changes is a primary cause of vehicle problems, surpassing other maintenance issues. A significant 60% advocate for the traditional 3,000-mile oil change interval.

The survey also indicated that Valvoline remains a preferred brand among ASE Master Technicians, both for their personal vehicles and for recommendations to customers. Bryan Emrich, Marketing Director at Valvoline, reinforces the importance of regular oil changes with quality oil, stating that it’s “the best way to prevent damage to your car’s engine and keep more money in your pocket.” Regular oil changes mitigate sludge buildup, which impairs engine performance and leads to expensive repairs.

The survey further reveals that 87% of mechanics believe that vehicle owners are delaying routine maintenance, primarily due to cost concerns. However, a resounding 97% agree that delaying maintenance ultimately results in higher costs due to the escalation of unattended problems into more significant issues.
