Liposuction is best suited for individuals who are not significantly overweight but have localized fat deposits. In women, these areas commonly include the abdomen, flanks, thighs, and neck. Other areas can include the arms, back, and buttocks. Men often seek liposuction for the lower abdomen and flanks (love handles). Firm skin elasticity is important for optimal results. Patients with significant skin laxity, particularly in the abdominal area, may benefit more from an abdominoplasty. The liposuction procedure typically involves tumescent fluid infusion, followed by fat extraction. Power-assisted liposuction is a technique used by some surgeons to enhance sculpting precision.
Ultrasonic liposuction (UAL) represents a significant advancement. This technique uses an ultrasonic probe to emulsify fat before removal. UAL is considered a more aggressive approach. Specific applications in my practice include treating men, addressing areas previously treated with liposuction, and managing patients with mild skin laxity in areas like the arms and abdomen. The ultrasonic energy promotes some degree of skin contraction or tightening, a benefit not typically seen with traditional liposuction. UAL has proven to be a valuable tool for suitable patients. Other technologies, such as laser-assisted liposuction, are also emerging. However, these technologies often come at a higher cost and may not offer substantial benefits over established methods. Prior to offering any new technology, it is essential to ensure it is thoroughly proven, provides a distinct advantage over existing techniques, and is safe, rather than simply being a marketing gimmick.
