How to Properly Prepare and Apply Asset Tags & Labels to Computers and IT Equipment: A Comprehensive Guide

Applying asset tags and labels correctly is crucial for their effectiveness. This guide details the best practices for ensuring a secure and lasting bond, particularly on computers and IT equipment.

The most critical factor is surface cleanliness. Any dirt, oil, or grease will prevent the adhesive from properly bonding. The recommended method is to thoroughly clean the application area with an alcohol wipe. These wipes are readily available and easy to use. Simply tear open the sachet, remove the wipe, and gently scrub the designated area.

Allow approximately 30 seconds for the alcohol to completely evaporate. Once dry, the surface should be free of contaminants, providing an ideal base for the asset tag.

Because these labels are designed with a strong adhesive, precise initial placement is essential. Repositioning, especially with void or destructible materials, can cause damage. To aid in alignment, lightly mark the corners of the intended placement area with a marker before cleaning with alcohol. Note that the ink from the marker itself may prevent adhesion if applied after cleaning.

After applying the label, allow sufficient time for the adhesive to fully cure. For vinyl destructible labels, expect approximately 2 hours to reach 40% strength, 24 hours for 60% strength, and a full 72 hours (3 days) to achieve 100% bond strength. This curing period is vital for optimal performance and security.
