After a distinguished 32-year career, Ford Motor Company Vice Chairman Greg Smith retired on March 1, 2006. Smith’s journey with Ford began in 1973 as an engineer with truck operations. He steadily ascended through the ranks, holding various engineering, product planning, and marketing positions before ultimately being named Vice Chairman.
Chairman and CEO Bill Ford acknowledged Smith’s significant contributions, stating, “Greg has contributed tremendously to Ford Motor Company in many areas, including leading the turnaround at Ford Motor Credit. His deep knowledge of all aspects of the business has been extremely helpful as we’ve developed our plans for the future, and I’m pleased he will remain with us in a consulting role.”
Throughout his career, Smith held key positions, including Truck and Powertrain Marketing Plans Manager, Manager of Car Marketing Plans, and Central Region Marketing Manager within the Ford Division. He also served as the Dallas District Operations Manager for the Lincoln Mercury Division.
In 1990, Smith returned from Dallas to become Director of Strategy and Advanced Planning for car product development. He was promoted to Executive Director of Strategic Planning and External Affairs for the Ford Financial Services Group in 1993. Later, Smith became President and Chief Operating Officer of Ford Motor Credit, eventually rising to Chairman and CEO. In 2004, he was appointed Executive Vice President and President of the Americas before assuming the role of Vice Chairman.

We appreciate his many contributions and will greatly miss his knowledge and insight.”
As Vice Chairman, Smith oversaw central corporate staffs, including Human Resources and Labor Affairs, Corporate Strategy and Information Technology, and Automotive Strategy. He played a crucial role in Ford Motor Company’s strategic development, key decision-making, and shaping its financial services future. Smith’s career reflects a dedication to Ford and the automotive industry.
