Our eyes are often the first thing people notice. Bright, alert eyes enhance attractiveness, compensating for other facial features. However, aging, stress, and lack of sleep can lead to droopy, tired-looking eyes, conveying an unintended impression of age or exhaustion.
One primary cause of droopy eyelids is aging. As we age, skin loses elasticity, and the upper eyelids begin to sag, sometimes accompanied by drooping eyebrows. Fat pads around the eyes, normally held in place by fibrous tissue, can also sag, creating a “baggy” appearance in both the upper and lower eyelids.
If you’re bothered by the appearance of tired, baggy eyes, blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, offers a solution. Performed by skilled cosmetic surgeons, eyelid surgery can dramatically rejuvenate the eyes.
The upper eyelid procedure involves a fine incision placed within the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Excess skin is removed, and fat is trimmed through this incision. The incision is then closed with a fine suture, which is typically removed within four days.
For the lower eyelid, an incision is often made on the inside of the eyelid to avoid visible scarring. This approach is considered safe as it preserves the supporting muscles of the eyelid. Excess fat is then removed through this incision.
The entire procedure, when performed on all four eyelids, usually takes about one and a half hours.
Recovery from eyelid surgery typically takes one to two weeks. Patients may experience temporary blurry vision, which usually resolves quickly. Some lumpiness may occur at the corners of the eyes, but sunglasses can easily conceal this. Makeup should be avoided for about five days post-surgery. Most normal activities can be resumed within three weeks.
