Erik Estrada, born in 1949 in East Harlem, New York, is of Puerto Rican heritage. While he later gained recognition for his roles in Spanish-language telenovelas, Estrada remains best known for his iconic portrayal of Officer Frank Poncherello in the television series “CHiPs.” The show, whose title is an acronym for California Highway Patrol, captivated audiences with its blend of action and camaraderie.

In 1981, a salary dispute led to Estrada’s temporary departure from “CHiPs.” While Olympic medalist Bruce Jenner filled his spot for several episodes, Estrada eventually returned, reaffirming his importance to the show.
