Many aspiring writers struggle with formatting when starting a new article. Determining the structure can consume valuable preparation time. As a writing instructor, I’ve observed this challenge frequently. If you’re reading this, you likely share this experience.
Writing a short article can be deceptively difficult, demanding focus and organization. However, with a simple structure, it becomes remarkably easy. This process boils down to three key steps:
Step One: Craft a Strong Thesis Statement
While the term ‘thesis statement’ might trigger memories of freshman composition, its importance cannot be overstated. A thesis is the cornerstone of any successful article, representing its central argument. It’s the core idea that binds the entire piece together. Think of your thesis as a promise to the reader – “This is what I intend to prove.”
A robust thesis not only guides the reader but also benefits the writer. Brainstorming a thesis can jumpstart the writing process, providing momentum, especially for shorter articles.
Elevating your thesis enhances its impact. A basic thesis is concise, stating your position, for example: “The three-step process simplifies article writing.” However, an expanded thesis includes supporting reasons (at least three are recommended) to solidify that position. For instance:
“Writing an article using the three-step process is easy because it provides a flexible and simple format, adapts to diverse topics, and offers a proven structure.”
This initial step is crucial. A good thesis defines the article’s purpose, outlines the writer’s message, makes a clear point supported by the article’s body, and employs specific, concrete language.
Step Two: Frame Your Article
Builders create a frame to provide support and shape for a house. Similarly, you’ll frame your article by expanding on the supporting points in your thesis. While this step needn’t be lengthy, the time invested here can save significant time in the next step.
Step Three: Write Your Article
You’ve now established the foundation for writing a short article quickly and easily using the keyhole strategy.
Aim for a five-paragraph structure:
* Paragraph 1: Introduction, including thesis statement
* Paragraph 2: Body – Supporting point 1
* Paragraph 3: Body – Supporting point 2
* Paragraph 4: Body – Supporting point 3
* Paragraph 5: Conclusion
Each body paragraph should elaborate on the points identified in your thesis, drawing upon ideas and examples brainstormed in step two.
While this strategy might not win awards, it enables you to efficiently produce a focused, informative article suitable for various business needs. With an optimal length of around 450 words for many online articles, this structure facilitates easy achievement of that target.
