During the recession, I discovered the power of creating your own luck after unexpectedly losing my job. I quickly sought a temporary position while searching for a permanent role. Accepting a minimum-wage job in an unfamiliar industry, I committed to learning everything possible and contributing fully. I devoured manuals, streamlined processes, trained new colleagues, and volunteered for extra duties. Within a month, I was offered my first management position.

This opportunity would have been missed if I had listened to those cautioning against a minimum-wage job or worried about accepting a role beneath my qualifications. By embracing the challenge, I opened doors that led to five promotions in seven years.

Throughout my career, culminating in a Vice President role at a multi-billion dollar company, I’ve observed that opportunities abound, often in unexpected places for those who distinguish themselves. Those who consistently exceed expectations find opportunities that others overlook. By setting aside ego and contributing wholeheartedly, individuals often create their own luck. Initiative is a highly valued asset.

Employees who only offer extra work for additional pay or increased responsibility for a salary increase are approaching it backward. My advice is to excel in your current role and then surpass expectations. Increased pay, greater responsibilities, and more significant opportunities naturally follow those who are proactive contributors. When hiring, promoting, or establishing new ventures, I always sought individuals who consistently exceeded expectations.
