In February 2006, Procter & Gamble (P&G) announced plans to eliminate 300 jobs within its pharmaceutical division by the end of the summer. The company did not specify which positions would be affected, but the cuts were expected to impact researchers, scientists, and other technical roles. The restructuring was slated to conclude by June 30th.

The primary impact was felt at P&G’s research center in Mason, Ohio, which housed 2,560 employees and served as the headquarters for major business operations. Employees at facilities in London, Toronto, and New York were also impacted.

According to P&G spokesperson Tom Millikin, these job cuts were not driven by cost-saving measures. Instead, the company characterized the move as a strategic shift, focusing on acquiring and licensing medicines from other companies rather than early-stage pharmaceutical research. P&G aimed to collaborate with biotechnology companies lacking the resources to commercialize promising chemical compounds.

This strategic redirection involved focusing on developing drugs for women’s health, musculoskeletal issues, and gastrointestinal ailments. Earlier in the month, P&G had entered into an agreement with Nastech, a pharmaceutical company, to expand and market Nastech’s nasal spray for osteoporosis.

The elimination of these 300 science-related positions had a noticeable impact on Cincinnati’s standing as a life science research hub, given that Procter & Gamble was the city’s largest employer. P&G, a multinational corporation with 98,000 employees across 80 countries, began as a manufacturer of candles and soaps. Its diverse product portfolio now includes diapers, detergents, shampoos, potato chips, and bar soaps, sold in 140 nations.

Prior to this announcement, reports had surfaced about a significant restructuring initiative within Procter & Gamble, potentially involving thousands of layoffs and plant closures. Following the appearance of these restructuring plans in a New York Times article, P&G’s stock value increased by 3 1/8 points.
