While mountain biking is possible in many locations, few experiences compare to the thrill of navigating miles of meticulously crafted singletrack trails through the scenic forests of North Georgia. However, mountain bikes often face restrictions in public parks due to concerns about trail erosion and potential conflicts with hikers. The solution? In Woodstock, Georgia, the community has taken matters into its own hands by creating its own dedicated bike park and trails.
The Southeast Off-Road Bicycle Organization (SORBA) is the driving force behind the immensely popular Blankets Creek trail system, located along the shores of Lake Allatoona. SORBA’s other notable projects include the Morningside Nature Preserve trail in Atlanta, connecting Midtown with Buckhead through a 30-acre forested area, and Big Creek Park in Roswell.
Blankets Creek Bike Park, Cherokee County’s only designated bike park, has quickly become a favorite among riders. Situated in Woodstock, just off Sixes Road and a short distance from downtown Atlanta (approximately 25 miles), the park attracts over 100,000 cyclists annually. Individuals, families, and seasoned riders alike gather here to enjoy the diverse trails, challenging workouts, and overall fun atmosphere.
The park features three distinct loops catering to various skill levels, from beginner-friendly paths to technically demanding trails. A fourth loop, the North Loop, is under construction and promises to challenge even the most experienced cyclists with its steep climbs and exhilarating descents. For those seeking a less intense experience, the Mosquito Flats trail and the slightly more challenging Mosquito Bite Trail offer fun, easy rides ideal for beginners or as a warm-up before tackling the more advanced trails. Intermediate riders can explore the Dwelling loop, while advanced riders can test their skills on the South Loop, which features a continuous series of switchbacks, climbs, rock gardens, roots, and log crossings.
While previous trails were constructed manually using hand tools and considerable effort, the new North Loop trail is being built using a mini-excavator, significantly reducing the construction time.
