For years, parents have struggled to treat diaper rash complicated by yeast infections (Diaper Dermatitis Complicated by Candidiasis or DDCC) in infants using over-the-counter adult antifungal creams. Now, there’s a new solution: Vusionâ„¢ (0.25% miconazole nitrate, 15% zinc oxide, and 81.35% white petrolatum) Ointment, the first prescription product specifically formulated and FDA-approved for DDCC in infants four weeks and older. Diagnosis of DDCC requires microscopic confirmation of pseudohyphae or budding yeast.

DDCC is a common and uncomfortable condition characterized by bright red patches with raised, irregular borders and white scales. Smaller patches, painful sores, and blisters often surround the main rash.

Diaper chafing that breaks the skin’s surface makes infants susceptible to yeast and other microorganisms. Diarrhea, prolonged diaper rash, poor skin hygiene, and recent broad-spectrum antibiotic use are also risk factors. While DDCC can occur year-round, it’s often seen during winter due to increased antibiotic use for illnesses like ear infections.

Previous treatments included antifungals, steroids, and combination products not specifically approved for DDCC or infant use. According to Dr. Mary Spraker, a pediatric dermatologist at Emory University, Vusionâ„¢ Ointment provides pediatricians and dermatologists with a targeted and well-tolerated treatment designed specifically for DDCC. “Doctors are no longer reliant on prescribing antifungal agents intended for adults that have not been tested on children with DDCC.”

Barrier Therapeutics, a pharmaceutical company focused on dermatology, developed Vusionâ„¢ Ointment.
