Buying on eBay can be a great way to find deals, but it’s essential to be aware of the risks involved. I’m sharing my recent experience to warn other buyers about what can happen when purchased items don’t arrive.
I won an eBay auction at a surprisingly low price. However, a week passed without the item arriving. I contacted the seller via email, but received no response. After a few days, I sent a second, more urgent email, still with no reply.
Following eBay’s policy, I filed a dispute ten days after payment, stating that I had contacted the seller twice without success. eBay informed me that it would take another ten days to determine liability and emailed the seller requesting a response.
I monitored the dispute’s progress through my PayPal account. After ten days, the seller still hadn’t responded, and PayPal ruled in my favor. However, the message contained a catch: winning the claim didn’t guarantee a refund. A few days later, I received another message stating that PayPal had been unable to recover funds from the seller’s account.
Essentially, even when paying via PayPal, which is often perceived as an insured payment method, there’s a significant risk of not getting your money back if your purchase never arrives. The main exception is when dealing with a Power Seller.
In my case, I received neither the goods nor a refund. I wonder how many others have been similarly affected by scams on eBay. It’s important to be cautious and take steps to protect yourself when buying on the platform.
