Acupuncture involves the gentle insertion of fine needles at specific points on the body. According to traditional Chinese medicine, these points lie along meridians, pathways that conduct “qi” or “chi,” the body’s vital life force. Blockages in these pathways are believed to cause pain and illness. Acupuncture aims to clear these blockages, restoring the natural flow of energy and promoting healing.

Acupuncture treatments are based on the belief that most ailments stem from energy blockages. By removing these blockages, the body can heal itself. During a session, a practitioner may insert between one and twenty needles, placing some superficially and others deeper into the tissue. The needles remain in place for 20-30 minutes.

Practitioners may gently manipulate the needles to enhance their effect. In some cases, such as treating high blood pressure, electrified needles are used. Moxibustion, burning specific herbs near the needle, is sometimes employed to stimulate energy flow.

Acupuncture can be used for a variety of conditions, including back pain, neck pain, and shoulder pain. Back pain can range from a dull ache to a debilitating sharp pain, while neck and shoulder pain can severely limit daily activities. Acupressure, applying pressure to specific points along the meridians, is another method to relieve these types of pain by releasing blocked energy. It can also address pain related to spinal injuries by releasing blocked energy in the spinal column.

Acupuncture can also assist individuals in quitting smoking. This treatment typically involves inserting needles into the ear (specifically the cartilage) and on the hands and wrists. Herbal remedies such as clove oil, wintergreen extracts, Evodia fruits, and Sichuan lovage rhizomes can be applied to further reduce cravings.

Furthermore, acupuncture has shown promise in treating skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, and allergies. These conditions often result from inflammation. By stimulating acupressure points, either manually or with electrical stimulation, acupuncture can reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms.
