Aromatherapy utilizes essential oils and aromatic compounds extracted from plants to promote mental relaxation and alleviate various ailments. Home aromatherapy is accessible through the use of essential oils, perfumes, and cosmetics. When integrated into pharmacological practices, it is termed clinical aromatherapy.
Aromachology explores the impact of scents on human behavior, with certain aromas believed to induce relaxation in both mind and body. Aromatherapy encompasses not only essential oils but also absolutes (oils extracted via solvent extraction, such as rose absolute), hydrosols (aqueous by-products of distillation, like rose water), infusions (aqueous solutions of plant material), phytoncides (volatile organic compounds from plants), and carrier oils (used to dilute essential oils, such as sweet almond oil).
Aromatherapy can be administered through inhalation, skin absorption (via baths, massages, and compresses), mucous membrane absorption (through oral rinses and gargles), and, in some cases, ingestion.
Aromatherapy offers a range of therapeutic benefits, including antiseptic, anesthetic, and psychological effects, influencing both the central nervous system and metabolism. For home use, blends of neroli, eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary, nutmeg, and peppermint can be combined with base oils, with a few drops of basil added for enhancement. For bathwater, oils like lavender and rose are commonly used. Aromatherapy is used to address conditions such as depression, insomnia, acne, joint pain, stress, coughs, and various skin problems.
Furthermore, aromatherapy can enhance skin health, promoting a radiant complexion and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Common essential oils for aromatherapy include sweet almond, avocado, cocoa butter, grapeseed, jojoba, olive, rosehip, sesame, and sunflower oil. However, caution should be exercised when using ajowan, almond (bitter), arnica, calamus, garlic, melilotus, onion, mustard, wormseed, and wormwood oils, and they should only be used under the guidance of a qualified aromatherapy practitioner.
