Ford Aspire: The Surprisingly Reliable Subcompact Car You Forgot About

The Ford Aspire, sold by Ford Motor Company from 1994 to 1997, was a subcompact car available in three-door and five-door configurations. Interestingly, the car’s body was manufactured by Kia Motors in South Korea, while the engine and its components were sourced from Mazda in Japan. This vehicle was also marketed as the Kia Avella in Asia, and as the Ford Festiva in Japan and Australasia, demonstrating its global reach under various brand names.

Fuel economy for the Ford Aspire averaged around 30 miles per gallon, although the official manual suggested a higher figure of 45 mpg. Beyond fuel efficiency, the Aspire was known for its ease of parallel parking and its remarkable reliability. Many owners reported the Aspire exceeding 200,000 miles without major repairs, a testament to its robust design.

Upon its debut in 1994, the Ford Aspire featured both a five-speed manual and an automatic transmission, and was a front-wheel-drive vehicle. Typically, it came equipped with a 63-horsepower four-cylinder engine. The two-door model included fog lights, a rear spoiler, and unique seat options. The four-door version boasted power rack and pinion steering.

Over its production run, several modifications were made to the Ford Aspire, including the removal of front spoilers, the addition of body-colored window moldings, rear spoilers, fog lamps, a tachometer, a distinctive instrument cluster, special seat and door trim fabrics, and center roof pillars. Further updates included new front and rear bumpers, headlamps, turn signals, tail lamps, and wheel covers. Its design proved to be efficient in maximizing cargo space, which could be further expanded by folding down the rear seats.

Aftermarket retailers offer a variety of parts and accessories for the Ford Aspire, including performance parts, body components, brakes, climate control systems, clutch parts, electrical components, transmission parts, mechanical parts, service tools, and various other upgrades.
