A manual transmission vehicle, often called a stick shift, presents a unique driving experience. While not as common as automatics, mastering a manual transmission unlocks a deeper understanding of vehicle control. Many driving experts believe that learning to drive a stick shift first makes transitioning to an automatic transmission significantly easier.

For those new to manual transmissions, practice is essential. Familiarize yourself with the pedal arrangement: from left to right, you’ll find the clutch, brake, and gas pedals. Next, study the gearshift diagram, typically located on the gearshift knob. This diagram illustrates the position of each gear.

To begin, fully depress the clutch pedal and shift the gear lever into neutral. Then, start the engine.

With the clutch pedal still fully depressed, shift into first gear (usually located in the top-left position). Engage the foot brake and release the parking brake. When ready to move, release the foot brake. Slowly begin releasing the clutch pedal. As you hear or feel the engine begin to slow slightly, gently press down on the gas pedal while continuing to release the clutch. The car should now start moving forward.

Accelerate in first gear until the engine reaches approximately 3,000 RPM. Remove your foot from the gas pedal and fully depress the clutch pedal. Swiftly move the gearshift lever down through neutral and into second gear, ensuring the lever is fully engaged. Gradually release the clutch pedal while simultaneously and gently pressing down on the gas pedal. Repeat this shifting process each time you reach approximately 3,000 RPM in subsequent gears.

To downshift and decrease speed, release the gas pedal. Press down on the clutch and move the gearshift lever through neutral into the next lower gear. Once engaged in the lower gear, slowly release the clutch pedal and apply the brakes as needed.
