India is intensifying its efforts in Africa to regain ground lost to China’s growing economic and political influence. While India’s historical ties with Africa predate those of China, a renewed focus is driven by the continent’s vast potential in resources like oil, gas, minerals, and diamonds. The first India-Africa conference underscores this commitment.

Historically, India and many African nations shared parallel struggles for independence. Mahatma Gandhi’s activism in South Africa remains a powerful symbol. However, domestic challenges led to a decline in India’s engagement with Africa for a period. Now, Indian industries, including major players like the Tata Group and pharmaceutical companies, are expanding their presence across the continent. Indian pharmaceuticals are particularly notable for providing affordable, life-saving drugs, including AIDS retrovirals, often at significantly lower costs than Western manufacturers. This has cultivated a positive image of India among many Africans, who sometimes view China’s involvement with more skepticism.

India’s strategy emphasizes capacity-building and human resource development in Africa through educational initiatives and specialized training programs. Simultaneously, India aims to secure access to Africa’s hydrocarbon resources to address its increasing energy demands. The government is actively pursuing opportunities to acquire oil and gas assets, ensuring the nation’s long-term energy security. Strengthening these long-standing relationships and forging new partnerships are central to India’s approach to solidify its position in Africa.
