Corporations have significantly boosted both the American and global economies. At its core, a corporation is a legal entity, empowering a group to operate as a unified body or individual. In recent decades, the term has evolved to encompass both for-profit and non-profit enterprises, categorized by their tax structures.

Unlike standard businesses, corporations face unique tax regulations, primarily divided into C-corporations and S-corporations.

C-corporations are liable for income taxes and cannot deduct dividend payments to stockholders. This category includes publicly traded companies and is the most prevalent type. Conversely, S-corporations are typically small businesses or those with sole proprietors. They are exempt from corporate taxes, with gains and losses directly passed to individual stockholders who adjust their personal income taxes accordingly.

Public corporations are widely common, owned by stockholders who purchase publicly traded stocks. Stockholders receive reports from corporate management and decisions are made by a Board of Directors elected by the stockholders based on their qualifications and expertise in fields like business, politics, or academia. The Board then appoints a Chairman, the highest authority in the management structure.

The corporate management system includes key figures like the CEO (Chief Executive Officer), responsible for overall business operations; the CFO (Chief Financial Officer), overseeing finances; and the COO (Chief Operating Officer), managing sales, production, and personnel. The CEO may also serve as the corporation’s president, with the COO and CFO acting as vice-presidents.

Corporate welfare is a significant topic, referring to special treatment and tax breaks afforded to corporations. This can include establishing offshore offices in countries with lenient tax laws, initiating bidding wars among communities for tax incentives when setting up offices or factories, and government bailouts to rescue corporations from bankruptcy or debt.

However, corporate welfare often occurs at the expense of local citizens and small businesses, making it a primary concern for the American government. While steps are being taken to address this, some politicians still enable corporate welfare clandestinely.
